Broward College South Gallery will showcase the works of Broward College Foundation board member Dionne Polite from Thursday, December 1, 2022 through Thursday, January 19, 2023. This event will be Polite’s first art exhibition and it is titled “KALEIDOSCOPE: My Culture, My Pride,” which will feature works, including “Abundance,” “Living In Color,” “Empty, but Full,” and more. The public is also encouraged to join Polite for an artist talk and reception on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, from 2 to 4 p.m.

“I am a self-taught artist who sees myself as a dynamic, ever-evolving, layered being, navigating through life while seeing and being in full color,” said Polite. “Therefore, with the amazing love and support of my family and friends, I am energized and determined to explore, create and display the kaleidoscope of my life through my art.”

Polite hails from Guyana. As a young child, she danced, painted, and indulged in many things that fed her creativity. In the early 1970s, Polite and her family immigrated to the United States, settling in New York. After the move, she stopped engaging in many creative pursuits she once loved to concentrate on the responsibilities of being the oldest child. She returned to painting again only a few years ago as an adult. At first, it was a way to connect with her aging parents and, later, to help her grieve through their deaths, which happened within the same year. Her artwork reflects her culture, history, childhood experiences in Guyana, and daily life here in South Florida. With paint, she tells her story her way.

In addition to serving in the Broward College Foundation, Polite is also AARP’s Florida Director of State Operations. In her position at AARP, she oversees and manages all outreach initiatives, engagement opportunities, and education efforts for over 50 communities across the state. She has received multiple recognitions and honorable mentions for her commitment and outreach efforts.
