A new logo for a new era. The Broward College Foundation’s new logo represents this new era and its positive shift focusing on achievement and empowerment. The icon is made up of two diamonds: one, a graduation cap representing students, and the other, the foundation that stands behind and supports the students. By overlapping the two, the foundation diamond becomes an arrow facing to the right, a powerful signifier of forward progress and moving the tassel to represent graduation.

I am honored to be one of the volunteers from our community who serve on the Broward College Foundation Board of Directors, a dedicated group of individuals who believe in the mission of Broward College. We are entrusted with the oversight and stewardship of gifts contributed by philanthropic individuals, foundations, and corporations.

BROWARD COLLEGE PREPARED HER FOR THE NEXT STEP Laura proved to be an exemplary student while at Broward College. In addition to meriting an American Dream Scholarship, she was in the Robert “Bob” Elmore Honors College and served as President of the Honors Student Committee. Scholarship support helped Laura graduate from Broward College with honors. She now attends Florida Atlantic University and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Biological Science. Her goal is to attend graduate school to become either a physician’s assistant or medical doctor.

ENDOWED TEACHING CHAIR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
The College President and members of the Endowed Teaching Chair selection committee surprised this year’s recipients by dropping in on their classes and announcing the awards in front of their cheering students. Among those celebrating this significant moment in academic excellence were, Barbara Wells, a member of the selection committee; George Weaver, representing the Emil Buehler Trust and its ETC; Nancy O’Donnell-Wilson, BCF Executive Director, and Helen Weaver.
GERTRUDE E. SKELLY CHARITABLE FOUNDATION GENERATIONS OF GENEROSITY
Contributing anonymously to local charitable causes throughout the years, Gertrude E. Skelly established the Gertrude E. Skelly Charitable Foundation in 1991. She believed that in establishing a foundation, she was continuing in the tradition of her parents, who also had strong interests in education, medicine, healthcare, and providing for those in need. Broward College continues to be amongst their top organizations for philanthropic support.
We are thankful that the trustees have once again invested $15,000 to support the Gertrude E. Skelly Memorial Nursing American Dream Scholarship. Their cumulative giving is approaching $500,000! JERRY TAYLOR & NANCY BRYANT FOUNDATION TRANSFORMATIONAL GIVING
This year, the Jerry Taylor & Nancy Bryant Foundation gifted $1.9 million to support aviation and avionics education at Broward College’s Emil Buehler Aviation Institute. The gift establishes the Taylor-Bryant Avionics Honors Scholarship, which will be awarded annually to five students from Miramar High School’s Aviation Science Magnet program, supports the expansion of a new hangar, where an avionics line lab will be housed, and funds further development of a bachelor’s degree program in aerospace science and an associate degree in avionics. The intention of the gift is to ignite student enthusiasm for the study of aviation and create a pathway to propel them to success.

AMERICAN DREAM SCHOLARSHIPS

Three years ago, the Broward College Foundation launched an intensive study to identify the students who would benefit the most from scholarship support. They discovered an often-overlooked population. Students who: • maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, • have completed 75 percent of their degree program, • have financial need, but receive little or no federal grant assistance because they work full- or part-time. These students have more “adult” responsibilities than “traditional” students and have a high likelihood of falling behind or dropping out when faced with an unexpected financial emergency. To address this need, the Foundation refocused its American Dream Scholarship criteria and made it the signature fundraising initiative. Since the revision:

To the “Dream Makers,” Please know you have been a beacon of hope in my life and one of the brightest lights in a year that has been riddled with tragedy and hardships. Everyone at Broward College has shown a genuine interest in seeing students like me succeed in life by helping us grow and complete our respective degrees. This has been instrumental to my success as I’ve had to work two jobs while pursing my degree to pay for school and support my family. This has led me to feel passionately about pursuing a degree in education so I may also help others reach their full potential.
Being active duty military in the U.S. Marine Corps and deploying while still pursuing my education has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. Being the first in my family to attend college has been one of the driving factors for me to push myself to succeed. Currently, one of my greatest obstacles is to finish my education, and I am taking that challenge head on. I will continue to strive for success in life and am honored to know that the completion of my associate degree is due to the American Dream Scholarship and donors like you. Throughout my six years with the military, I have seen plenty of suffering, and I am determined to strive for a better life for myself, my family, and our community.

GOLF CLASSIC BENEFITING THE FIRST GENERATION IN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP The sun beamed almost as brightly as the smiles radiating from the scholarship recipients who volunteered at the Cigna/Broward College 31st Annual Golf Classic. “We always have a beautiful day of golf,” said Broward College Foundation board member Lloyd F. Rhodes, who served as chair of the committee that planned the event, “but it doesn’t compare to the tournament’s impact on the lives of students who receive these scholarships.” The Golf Classic netted $86,277, and the proceeds will be matched by the state of Florida and support the First Generation in College Scholarship. We are extremely thankful for our generous corporate and individual sponsors who understand that the success of our students not only influences individual lives but also makes significant economic impact in our community – proof that an investment in student success always doubles its return.

When you include the Broward College Foundation in your financial and estate planning, you ensure your legacy of providing opportunity to students who are determined to change their lives through the pursuit of higher education. Alex Wells was a member of Broward College’s aviation faculty for 20 years before retiring in 1998. He even served as chair of that department for a portion of his tenure.

In the mid-1980s, aviation schools had only two or three textbooks to incorporate into their curriculums. Alex turned that situation into a life-changing opportunity. He wrote or contributed to nine aviation textbooks. He made enough
Alex and his wife Mary announced their intention to leave a legacy gift to Broward College to support students who plan to go into aviation as a career. It’s where Alex got his start, and they want to help others achieve their dreams as well.
