We congratulate alumnus Luis Aponte '00 on the publication of his article in the prestigious journal Education, a peer-reviewed education journal published continually for more than 142 years. Titled "Reviewing and Updating the Documented Historical Reports on School Shootings: New Strategies to Help Save Lives on Campuses" the article explores the creation of a new and comprehensive archival research database that analyzes 30 years of gun violence that has occurred on U.S. school properties and examines the commonly accepted conclusions about school shootings; the issue of underage and illegal gun access; how schools are being protected on a daily basis; and how communities and law enforcement can join together to develop more customized solutions to disrupt the juvenile/social patterns that actually lead to school gun violence. You can find Luis's website dedicated to his upcoming book on school shootings, A Safe Place, at http://ow.ly/qzCR50MItrT, and the article from Education here http://ow.ly/HTMG50MItpM.

Broward College Visual & Performing Arts is hosting the opening reception of 諸行無常 _ this too, shall pass featuring the work of Mayuko Ono Gray, an accomplished graphite artist based in Houston, Texas. The opening reception is August 31 from 4 - 7 p.m. and will feature an artist lecture at 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. The exhibition will be on view through September 20 in the Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery, located on the Central Campus of Broward College in building 6 (3501 SW Davie Road, 33314). Born in Gifu, Japan, Ono Gray was trained in traditional Japanese calligraphy in her youth and later studied classical Western drawing before receiving her MFA in painting from the University of Houston. Her powerful, large graphite drawings include people, animals, and still-life intertwined with hiragana and kanji characters that spell out Japanese proverbs associated with the images. This calligraphic writing is a continuous line that moves through the work as a metaphor for life and the passage of time. She also expresses this interest in the journey from birth to death by creating one self-portrait a year to document the changes in her own life.
