FUTURE ALUMNI LEADERS CELEBRATED AT STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION INDUCTION
We are thrilled to announce the induction of our new Broward College Student Government Association (SGA) leaders, who represent the bright future of our college and its alumni. Each of our three campuses is home to a dedicated Student Government body, ensuring that every student voice is heard and valued. These leaders are not just shaping the present, but they are also the alumni leaders of tomorrow, poised to carry forward the legacy of excellence and service.
Lauren Adamo, the Interim Senior Director of Student Engagement at Broward College, said this about the ceremony “Student government at Broward College is more than just a leadership role—it's a cherished rite of passage that honors our students' dedication and commitment. The induction ceremony is a celebration of their journey, marking the beginning of their impact on our campus community. As they step into these roles, they embrace the opportunity to shape the future and inspire others, reflecting the true spirit of leadership and service.”
During the induction ceremony, City of Lauderdale Lakes Commissioner Karlene Maxwell-Williams shared her perspectives on service and leadership with the student leaders.
Zachary Whalen is President of the Central Campus Student Government Association, serves as a Student Government Association Trustee on the Broward College Board of Trustees, and is a student of the College Academy at Broward College. He expressed his enthusiasm saying, “The new Student Government administration is deeply honored and excited to be officially inducted. Our team is a representative cross section of Broward College’s ambitious student body, and we look forward to a meaningful year of service. Go Seahawks!”
|
As a memento of this moment, Broward College Alumni & Friends offered a gift of a business card holder to each inductee, which is a nod to the aspirations of these student leaders, who aim to become doctors, marine scientists, engineers, finance professionals, and more.
|
This gift serves as a reminder that their current roles in student government are just the beginning of their professional journeys. It encourages them to continue building their networks, honing their skills, and striving for excellence in their chosen fields. We are proud to support these future Broward College alumni on their journey and look forward to witnessing their continued success.

The College Academy at Broward College recently shined a light on the successes of alumna and serial entrepreneur Mecca McDonald. Mecca was one of a handful of grantees singled out by Alexis Ohanian, co-founder and former executive chairman of social media platform Reddit, who awarded her with a $100,000 grant in June. In her Linkedin post, Mecca said this prestigious and generous grant will take her sustainable jewelry company “to the next level.”
Mecca describes herself as “an emerging biomaterials founder, entrepreneur, and creative based in New York”. After acquiring her AA with highest honors from Broward College, she next earned two bachelor's degrees from Johns Hopkins University in Economics and Psychology. While a student at Johns Hopkins, she was awarded the 2021 Eugene Leake award for outstanding achievement in the Visual Art department and was awarded $20,000 to develop and grow her start up.
