WELCOME TO BROWARD COLLEGE PRESIDENT TOREY ALSTON!

Broward College Alumni & Friends is thrilled to welcome Mr. Torey Alston on his first day as Broward College's eighth permanent President and Chief Executive Officer. President Alston embarked on his role at the college on Monday, February 24.

On his first day, President Alston hit the ground running, meeting with our senior leadership and called the Faculty Senate President Dr. Richard Louis as well as the Central Campus Student Government President and Student Trustee Mr. Zachary Whalen and other student leaders.

In a recent communication sent to you, our alumni, President Alston highlighted the importance of hearing from you about how you took what you learned at Broward College and used it as the foundation for your personal and professional lives.

As we begin to chart our course into the future and make Broward College the number one destination for academic excellence, you will help shape the next generation. For this reason, we hope that you continue to get involved through Broward College Alumni & Friends.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF BROWARD FUELS SPACE EDUCATION WITH $65,000 GIFT TO BUEHLER PLANETARIUM

The leadership at the Community Foundation of Broward directed a $65,000 gift from their John H. Rau Space Education Fund to provide the financial resources needed to modernize the software at the Buehler Planetarium on the Broward College A. Hugh Adams Central Campus. This donation honors the late Mr. Rau's wishes to educate and inspire people about space and space exploration by providing access to real-time, state-of-the art, full-dome planetarium content including NASA’s extensive online libraries. Buehler Planetarium visitors can now explore local planets or visit potential exoplanets where humans may one day explore. They can visit a Rover performing analysis on Mars, ride along with a lander on a comet, or dive down into the human body or chemical sciences for a closer look at the world.

CAREER CONVERSATIONS WITH ALUMNI

Earlier this month, our Central Campus Student Government Association leaders, Zachary Whalen and Naima Allonce expertly moderated a conversation with proud Broward College alumna, Tamecka McKay, ITIL, MPA, CGCIO. At the invitation of Broward College Alumni & Friends, Tamecka visited campus on her day off and generously listened, answered questions, and motivated our students by her transparency and example. The STEM students in the audience lined up to gain further insight from Tamecka after the panel ended. We're so proud to have an exemplary graduate like Tamecka proudly sharing her connection and gratitude for Broward College in our community and in her role as the Chief Information Officer for the City of Fort Lauderdale.

Yasmin Teja was born in Zanzibar, raised in Kenya, and has called South Florida home for nearly 50 years. She speaks Swahili and is a resolute advocate for education and community service.

A proud Broward College alumna, Yasmin earned her A.A. in 1980, transferring to FAU on dual scholarships. She later earned her MBA in 1983, launching a successful career in Accounting and Finance at American Express, Mitel, and the State of Florida. However, her passion for student success brought her back to Broward College, where she worked in academic support and taught Reading as an adjunct professor. A highlight of her teaching career was collaborating in Learning Community classes with her longtime mentor, friend, and colleague, Professor Trish Joyce.

Now a Library Specialist for Broward County Libraries, she champions literacy and outreach programs. Yasmin has been recognized with several awards throughout her career, including the Broward College Unsung Hero Award in 2016 and the Professional Technical Staff Outstanding Achievement Award in 2017. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Library Science at USF.

Yasmin was one of three Broward College graduates speakers at our college Professional Development Day on February 21. She shared her personal journey as an international student at the time and the pivotal impact that Broward College former president A. Hugh Adams had on her thinking about how she could serve her community.
