UPCOMING EVENTS

Mark your calendars for two virtual events, presented by the Alumni & Friends Network.

Saturday, September 11 at 10 a.m. – Professor Alexandra Alessandri will read from her children’s book "Isabel and Her Colores Go to School." This event is suitable for families with children from ages 5-8 years old or anyone interested in children’s literature.

This first-day-of-school story beautifully serves as a mirror for children learning English and as a window into their experience for their classmates...English, with its blustery blues and whites, just feels wrong to Isabel. She prefers the warm oranges and pinks of Spanish. As she prepares for class at a new school, she knows she’s going to have to learn–and she would rather not! Her first day is uncomfortable, until she discovers there’s more than one way to communicate with friends. This is a universal story about feeling new and making new friends.

Wednesday, October 27 at 6 p.m. – Professor Billy Jones will guide us in a Halloween-themed interactive exploration of suspense and fear in literature and art.

Professor Billy P. Jones is a writer of short story fiction and poetry, a podcast producer, and a filmmaker. As co-host of "Fright Talk," he examines the latest in horror and suspense. He is currently working on a horror-themed short film and completing a short story collection of horror tales. Professor Jones teaches literature and composition at Broward College.

$100,000 DONATION FOR FIRST GENERATION IN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

We are thrilled to announce that for the second consecutive year, the Broward College Foundation received a $100,000 gift to be directed to the First Generation in College Scholarship. This generous donation from Katherine Allen and her daughter Ethel McGlynn represents two thirds of the total matching funds needed to receive a 2:1 match from the State of Florida’s First-Generation Matching Grant Program. In the 2020-2021 academic year, 1,299 degree-seeking students received $425,902.50 in funding, thanks to the Allen family and others sharing the same passion to support first generation college students.

WELCOME ABOARD

We’re pleased to welcome Jessica Figueroa Sabdul back to the Broward College family as our new Marketing & Communications Manager.

Jessica is a #BCProud Class of 2013 graduate of the Robert “Bob” Elmore Honors Institute. At Broward College, Jessica began her academic career in Mass Communications. She later transferred to Florida International University, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with her Bachelors of Science in Communications.

Jessica brings with her more than six years of experience in public relations and integrated marketing communications. She believes in the power of community and in providing hope and opportunities to those who may not otherwise have them. This is what drives her passion to return to Broward College.
