This year marks the 60th anniversary of P’an Ku magazine, the award-winning student literary and visual arts magazine of Broward College. In celebration of this great milestone, we invite you to join us as the magazine's launch party on Thursday, April 18. To RSVP, click here.
In advance of this event, we interviewed one of P’an Ku’s former editors, Mark Jette, class of 1995. Check out a preview of Mark's interview featured on the Alumni Spotlight below.

The following interview from P'an Ku's alumnus and former editor Mark Jett highlights some of his memorable moments as a Broward College student.
Mark, where did you grow up and what motivated you to attend Broward College? I was born in Hollywood, Florida then grew up in Miramar, Florida. After graduating high school, then working for several years, I decided it was time to start working on a degree. Since Broward College, which was Broward Community College when I attended, was nearby, I chose to pursue my AA degree. After graduating Broward College, I transferred to Florida Atlantic University (FAU) to complete my BFA degree.
Can you tell us about one or two moments that stand about your time at the College? Having attended Broward College almost 30 years ago, it feels like a whole different lifetime. I enjoyed editing and designing P’an Ku. Promoting student work was also very fulfilling. Having the issues I edited win awards across the country and across the state of Florida made it even more special.
Did you have any favorite professors or people at the College who were important to you as a student? Dr. Patrick Ellingham was by far my favorite professor. Dr. Ellingham was the faculty member who oversaw P’an Ku during my time as editor. His experience with self-publishing, as well as his keen insight, was instrumental in making the magazine a success. Outside of the magazine, we had many long conversations on literature and art. We became good friends then kept in touch after I graduated.
Where did you go after Broward College? How did what you learn at the College prepare you for your path? After graduating Broward College, I attended FAU where I graduated with highest honors, as well as from the Honors Institute, then received my Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with a concentration in Graphic Design. The work as editor on P’an Ku allowed me to become the editor for the inaugural issue of INVerse, the FAU South Campus literary arts magazine.
Any parting thoughts about your connection to the College? During my time at Broward College, I met many wonderful teachers and staff members who were very supportive and had unique perspectives on the world.

BRITTANY VALERA
The cost of attending college extends far beyond tuition alone. From textbooks to housing, transportation to meals, these expenses can quickly add up, often presenting significant challenges for students. Your ongoing support through recurring giving can help alleviate these burdens, providing crucial assistance to those striving for academic excellence.
Take it from one of our dedicated recurring donors, Brittany Valera, who understands the profound impact even modest contributions can make. "Even by putting a small drop in the bucket, I know that a few or more students will be able to finish what they have started as a result of my giving," Brittany shares. "Even with a small donation, I know that I'm able to make an impact on the lives of Broward College students."
Now is your chance to follow Brittany's lead and show your love for Broward College every day through monthly giving. Together, we can continue to support and empower students to achieve their academic goals.
