HOWARD GREENFIELD CHARITABLE FOUNDATION DONATES $45K TO COMBAT STUDENT FOOD INSECURITY
The Howard Greenfield Charitable Foundation provided a generous $45,000 donation to the Seahawk Marketplace food pantries. This gift will support students by addressing food insecurity, to ensure they have access to nutritious meals and essential supplies. Recognizing that hunger can be a barrier to academic success, the Foundation has long supported initiatives that include financial, academic, and social challenges for students. Through their continued generosity, the Foundation’s trustees are helping more students focus on their education without the added stress of where their next meal will come from. Broward College is grateful for their commitment to student success.

We are pleased to introduce our future Broward College alumni who are student leaders today and alumni leaders tomorrow.
In this edition, we spotlight Kandra Star Williams who has served as the Student Government President for Broward College’s North Campus since August 2024. Kandra oversaw a number of initiatives as a student leader including partnering with Alumni & Friends during Philanthropy Week and encouraging over sixty students to feel good about becoming donors to BC for the first time.
During her term, Kandra grew in her confidence and developed her public speaking abilities which she demonstrated with great skill as the Fall 2024 Commencement Student Speaker.
Kandra shared with us one of the key lessons she learned from her time in Student Government Broward College:
“One important thing I learned outside the classroom is networking. Being in student government, you had the chance to travel to conferences, introduce yourself to so many people, and connect with some of those you meet. In the long run, you could be building a friendship you never knew you needed. Then, you open so many opportunities for yourself and your future. I am forever grateful for the experience that Broward College has offered me being a part of Student Government."

Alumnus Felipe Tarcinale took a three-year break from his studies at Broward College during the uncertainty of the pandemic. That hiatus was enough for him to reassess and rekindle his desire to obtain a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from the R. Motwani Family Academy. When he did return to BC, he came back with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. Within the supportive environment that Broward College offered him, professors Robert Donato and Mirsad Krijestorac stood out as the most influential for Felipe. When he graduated in December 2024, he left excited for the opportunities it would bring and confident that his life was heading in the right direction.
Immediately after graduation, Felipe put his skills and education to work by volunteering at the Visit Lauderdale Food and Wine festival. The festival allowed him to network and connect with people who inspired him in this field. Not only did he get to network with top restaurants and industry professionals, but he also got to enjoy their delicious food—a true win-win! Felipe encourages all students or hospitality alumni to volunteer for that annual event.
Indeed, the volunteering opportunity was a game-changer for his career: shortly after the festival, he landed a job in the wine industry where he now works a sales representative for a wine distributor.
About his experience at Broward College, Felipe says, “I loved my time at Broward College! I think this college sets people up for success and I'm happy to say I attended it. Whether you are a young student or an adult student, Broward College will always support you."

We celebrate alumna Katrina Thompson who joined Monarch Air Group in 2023 and was recently promoted from Executive Account Manager to Aircraft Sourcing Manager. Katrina studied and became a pilot through the Broward College aviation program and offered this testimonial about the impact of BC on her path:
“I chose Broward College for a more structured path towards my flight training and pilots license, and I was not let down. My BC courses in addition to the one-on-one training provided with the Phoenix East Aviation partnership, set me up for success in my current field by giving me a well-rounded foundation across all topics in aviation.
I learned a lot from my professors about aviation weather, aviation safety, FAA rules and regulations and airport/airline operations and I use this knowledge and these skills every day in my role.”
Katrina exemplifies the best of Broward College out in the community, highlighting the exceptional professionals our college produces.
See the press release here about her promotion and join us in congratulating Katrina.
