PRESIDENTIAL INVESTITURE

The formal investiture of Broward College President Gregory Adam Haile took place in the Ralph R. Bailey Concert Hall on Friday, March 29. It was a beautiful and moving event.

President Haile received the medallion and chain of office from President Emeritus Armstrong. Use of a medallion as part of academic regalia began during the Middle Ages. In contemporary usage, the medallion symbolizes the authority of the president and is worn at official ceremonies, such as commencement.

Individuals representing faculty, staff, students, trustees, government officials, and community leaders participated in the tradition and pageantry of academic inauguration started in Italy more than 1,000 years ago at the Universitá di Bologna, where scholars assembled and marched in procession in their robes for the installation of rectors. That tradition has carried over and has been expanded in formal ceremonies to mark the installation of college and university presidents.

During the program, President Haile announced a transformational gift from the DeLuca Foundation to support both construction of a new hangar that’s part of the expansion of the Emil Buehler Aviation Institute and the college’s Health Sciences program, a gift from Dev Motwani to establish the Ramola Motwani Academy for the Hospitality Industry at Broward College, and a $100,000 commitment from the Haile family to support the Broward UP initiative.

Gregory Adam Haile, Esq. assumed the role of seventh president of Broward College on July 1, 2018. Before his appointment, he served as the general counsel and vice president for Public Policy and Government Affairs for Broward College from September 2011 to June 2018. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University, graduating magna cum laude, and his juris doctorate from the Columbia University School of Law.
