5K WALK FOR AWARENESS

More than 200 alumni, faculty, staff, students, and community supporters woke up early on Saturday, January 27 to participate in the 2nd Annual Walk for Awareness to End Human Trafficking. This 5K, which recognizes January as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, draws attention to human trafficking as a clear and present threat to individuals, communities, and our country.

We congratulate Broward College alumna Phillipa Vassell, for organizing another successful 5K Walk for Awareness. She shares, “I felt proud of the attendees who came from all walks of life—students, professionals, survivors, advocates, and community leaders—and the way we came together united in the common goal of shining a light on this pervasive issue. In the end, we were left more empowered to act to end the demand for human trafficking.”

Alum

Recent graduate Nahama Eldine shares her story with us about the impact of Broward College on her life.

I am Nahama Eldine, a 21-year-old Haitian who arrived in the USA in March 2021. I embarked on my educational journey at Broward College in August 2021, starting with English classes from scratch. Despite the language barrier, I persevered and graduated from Broward College on December 14, 2023, with an Associate of Arts in Business Administration.

My commitment to education doesn’t stop there; I am determined to continue my path toward success by pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Management at Florida Atlantic University. Simultaneously, I have been granted the incredible opportunity to work as an Administrative Assistant II at Palm Beach State College, starting in the spring semester on January 8, 2024.

As a first-generation student, I carry the dreams of my family and my little sister back in Haiti, who looks up to me as a role model. Completing high school at 16 and then waiting two years to come to the US at 18 to start college was a challenge, but I made a promise to myself to overcome any obstacles. Even if it meant taking those English classes and dealing with my accent, I was determined to become a regular student at Broward College within two years.

Throughout this journey, Broward College played a crucial role in shaping my professional path. They helped me polish my resume and guided how to excel in interviews, ultimately boosting my confidence to present myself professionally.

I am living proof that with dedication, hard work, and unwavering determination, anyone can overcome challenges and achieve their dreams. My story serves as a testament to the power of persistence and the pursuit of higher education. I am ready to continue my educational and professional journey, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
